Dont even get me started. I had to train a business how to use these readers, along with setting them up and testing everything. This entire upgrade process is important, but not being distributed very well at all.

All my cards have chips now. I have to remember a pin again. I have no idea why this is happening.

God damn chip cards
It’s obnoxious. And slower than swiping. And if you accidentally pull the card early it’s all fucked.
And don’t beep at me the second it’s done you mother fucker I’m waiting to pull the card out.

Yeah they seem to be everywhere but only a handful of places actually use them. And they’re always places you don’t expect to have them.

Yes, it has to do with the overall change of banking security, and its supposed to be spearheaded by the merchant accounts providers, however many are not pushing it because they are obligated to provide discounted EMV readers and software. Its causing many services to target competitor clients, but not through advertising. Most companies wont even mention it, but if you were to call, they’ll sell you a new merchant account and include the hardware. Its not a positive situation for most smaller businesses, so they simply run transactions as credit, and dont purchase new EMV readers because they detect the type of card and will reject a swipe for not being the correct transaction type.
The small details always screw with everyone. Luckily the business I worked with didnt need a lot of training, but all said and done, the upgrade cost them at least a couple thousand dollars, and they may not be able to write that off. Smaller restaurants that do takeout or similar arent going to take quite a hit, but medium and large businesses that arent up to date will suffer the most.

What drives me crazy is when the cashier at a place that has active chip readers acts annoyed in telling you what to do even though 1) you already know so didn’t ask & 2) there are instructions on the screen and you can read

There are a couple of businesses I frequent that have signs on the machines saying something like, “chip reader out of order, please swipe card”.
Wish I could opt to swipe on working machines. Just let me swipe my card and go.

Yeah and even worse my parents (small business owners, they own a repair shop my dad’s the only mechanic) had to buy a chip reader one as soon as they were out and set it up or they could’ve been fined.

I work part time at a retail establishment that has the hardware, but still have not been provided with the software to use the reader. Now, I don’t know if that falls on corporate or whomever processes our transactions. All this being said, people are still fucking dumb. We have a sign in the chip-card slot in every one of our machines that says the card reader is not active and to swipe. One out of three people will still try to use the chip reader anyway. One out of ten will actually pull the sign out and put their card in. I don't understand how people manage to function in society some times.

My credit processor is way behind and said they are slowly updating business by type. Why did I buy the new machine almost a year ago if I can’t even use it? I have saved on processing fees so I suppose it’s a wash.

i hate the chips they take longer and whenever i use one it makes a fast klaxon noise to take out the card which is annoying and doesn’t make sense.
How is it more secure to use a chip instead of a magnetic strip?

“its supposed to be better security wise” Oh yeah?!
*goes to 6 stores over the course of 9 days, only 2 were actually ready to go with the new way*
Ok how about telling the stores FIRST to get with the program instead of setting consumers up to look like they don’t know what they’re doing.

Ironically, I’ve found most small businesses have the chip reader enabled while the larger stores tend to have the chip reader but only have the software to swipe a card.
Weird.

Yep. The cost to upgrade goes up exponentially with more chain stores. Its the same reason some places like Target or Macy’s will sometimes say they only accept certain cards. They barter over the processing fees, and stop accepting cards until they can reach a more favorable agreement.
The financial industry is all colors of messed up.

It’s more secure in every single way. You can’t just copy what’s on a chip as it uses a different ID number for every transaction, while a mag stripe simply stores all of your information on there for anyone to read at anytime. There’s absolutely no security at all for mag stripe.
